About this data
How PlainCarbon works, and why you can trust these numbers
What this site is
PlainCarbon is a public data portal that makes corporate greenhouse gas emissions searchable and comparable. Every figure comes from the EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP), the mandatory federal program that has required large industrial facilities to report their direct emissions since 2010, aggregated to the company level using EPA's own parent-company attribution data.
Editorial process
- Source. Download the EPA GHGRP facility-level emissions export (FLIGHT tool) for each reporting year, 2011 through the latest published year.
- Verify. Join facility records to EPA's own parent-company attribution table, then aggregate to company totals, keeping every figure traceable back to the original EPA facility report.
- Publish. Load the aggregated dataset into our search-optimized database and compile company, industry, and state pages that link back to the original EPA source.

What is the EPA GHGRP?
The EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) requires large industrial facilities that emit 25,000 metric tons or more of CO2 equivalent per year to report their emissions annually. Data has been collected since 2010.
What does CO2e mean?
CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) is a standard unit for measuring greenhouse gases. It converts all gases (methane, nitrous oxide, etc.) into the equivalent amount of CO2 that would cause the same warming effect.
How current is this data?
The most recent data is from 2023, published by EPA in October 2024. EPA publishes annual updates each fall for the prior reporting year.
What is California SB 253?
SB 253 (Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act) requires US companies with revenues over $1 billion doing business in California to publicly disclose their Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions starting in 2026.
